Net neutrality and intellectual freedom presentation by Tim Dodge at WVLA/SELA Joint Conference 2017

TimDodge2016a (3)The West Virginia Library Association is pleased to have Tim Dodge from Auburn University present at the WVLA/SELA Joint Conference 2017.

We asked him a few questions in regards to his career and upcoming session.

Please describe what you do?

Reference Librarian.   Subject Specialist in History and Political Science.

What is your session title?

Net Neutrality:  Protecting Intellectual Freedom and More

Please tell us what your session is about?

Efforts are being made to undo network neutrality provisions instituted in 2015 to ensure that Internet Service Providers do not block or artificially modify Internet search results based on commercial and other concerns.   This presentation will provide a basic overview of the issue plus possible courses of action for librarians.

How will the information in your presentation benefit libraries, librarians, or information professionals?

I hope it will clarify a sometimes abstract issue and alert attendees to the importance of Net Neutrality.   I will provide some concrete suggestions for what librarians and others can do to stay informed and steps they can take to advocate on behalf of maintaining Net Neutrality to Congress and the Federal Communications Commission.

A fun ice breaker question – if you could have a conversation with any person fictional/living/deceased who would you want to talk to and why?

Arizona Dranes.   This blind African American Pentecostal missionary (1889-1963) recorded some amazing records in the 1920’s featuring for the first time on record what we now recognize as gospel-style piano and singing.   She was the subject of my book, The School of Arizona Dranes:  Gospel Music Pioneer (Lexington Books, 2013).

Do you have professional website/blog/social media site you would like to share with our attendees?

Well, my web site is more recreational than professional since it primarily features playlists of my weekly radio show.  If interested,:  http://www.auburn.edu/~dodgeti/

Thank you Tim for sharing your presentation information! We look forward to your session happening Thursday, November 9th at 4:30 in the Johnson Room.
